Ever since I was a young man, now many years ago, I have been a keen angler. I became a Christian later in life, in the late 1980's, and for a number of reasons have found my walk with God to be somewhat difficult at times. My fault not His.

It was during one of these times when I was straying away that I took the family fishing on a summer's evening over to South Weald near Brentwood. It was a warm, sunny evening and although I was fishing a swim I knew well the sport was very slow. I still don't know why but for some inexplicable reason my glasses fell into the lake right in front of me. The water was about four feet deep.

Not a problem I thought, just get the landing net out, a couple of sweeps and I should soon locate them. Half an hour later I still had not found them and I was beginning to get panicky as I needed them to drive home and the Wife does not drive.

So I said to God, “OK, I know I have strayed but show me where my glasses are and I promise to go to church on Sunday and to keep going.” Cheeky I know but the answer was immediate. And there was no mistaking it as it sounded like a loud voice that was clearly audible saying, “Put your net eight feet to the right under the tree and you will find them.” Needless to say that I did and there they were just as He said, wet but totally undamaged. And, of course, I went to church the following Sunday.

I am still going to St. Erkenwald and yes there are times when things are not plain sailing but like before if I need help I now know that all I have to do is ask Jesus and He will respond. Not always in the way or at the time that I would like, but then, unlike mine, His way and timing is perfect.
