Getting up close and personal with Clive and Catherine Pooley who lead the church at St Erkenwald's. The couple who have been married since 1975 started living in Barking in 1999 and Clive was made pastor of the church in 2002.
The couple describe Tesco's as the best thing about Barking because it has a Costa Coffee. They also like the openness of the folk they meet.
Catherine:
Reading books written by Christian authors. Eating Indian and Chinese food or going out for coffee and cake!
Clive:
I love eating Indian food. I enjoy taking photos - which is simple with a digital camera. I particularly enjoy taking pictures sunsets - but they never do justice to the real thing. I also like to 'blob' in front of the TV with a good glass of red wine, snuggle up to Catherine and watch a good film.
Clive & Catherine:
Walking near to water, whether its along a river bank or on the seashore. We particularly love waterfalls and have enjoyed some wonderful holidays exploring remote falls. We enjoy taking our dog Molly for walks. We enjoy visiting our family.
Clive & Catherine:
There has been a shift away from focussing on building a church toward focussing on the values of the Kingdom of God. This has resulted in an increased desire for us all to be Jesus wherever we find ourselves. In reality that means not giving ‘pat’ answers to life's problems, not necessarily even offering an invitation to church but simply giving those we meet an encounter with the living God who knows them and loves them and who wants them to be made whole. Now that's a whole lot of fun.
Clive & Catherine:
Ordinary Christians are rapidly growing in confidence as they minister to people outside the four walls of the church. As a result more and more people are coming alive in the Spirit of God. There is, we sense, a growing desire for holiness amongst church members especially so as we seek to know God and His ways more fully .
Clive and Catherine:
We have two sons who are both married with children of their own, making us grandparents three times over! We also have a dog named Molly, she is a cross between a Labrador and a Jack Russell so she’s full of energy and a little mischief.
Clive:
My vision for the church is that it would be a centre for worshipping God. An Oasis where people come to meet with God and see how they can walk with Him every day of their lives.
My desire is for people to meet personally with Jesus, to experience the Father’s love and encounter the healing power of the Holy Spirit in order to live transformed lives and bring about change in our community.
Clive and Catherine:
Our plan was to spend just 3 years in Barking. However, God had other plans! He spoke to me (Clive) most clearly one night when I came to a meeting at St Erkenwald’s saying to me “This is where you will minister”.
It’s the people that keep us in Barking and seeing the amazing things that God is doing amongst us.
